We spend so much time working with the small details of gynecomastia, we sometimes forget there are many out there still with very basic questions. Here’s one we spotted the other day:
What kind of doctor is best to see for gynecomastia?
If you’re at step one in terms of your man boobs, we want to answer the question for you. But we know our reply might raise an eyebrow. With more than three decades of experience in man boob surgery, and hearing all the stories patients tell us about their journeys, our answer is: you should see a couple of board certified plastic surgeons about your condition.
We know what you’re thinking:
We understand—truly. When you’re just starting to consider what to do about your moobs, these thoughts are perfectly normal.
If you’re like many guys we’ve met, man boobs are a topic you first bring up with your primary care doctor. Or, if you’re a teen, with your pediatrician. This is good—they can reassure you that moobs are not unusual, it’s not likely there’s something terribly wrong and so on. But do know that it’s the role of a primary care physician to know about many medical conditions; most are not specialists in moobs. You may not get the most detailed, up-to-date input from them, and sometimes what they tell guys is just wrong.
Some patients consult an endocrinologist, thinking there might be something amiss with their hormones. This is good too—ruling out a hormonal imbalance can help put your mind at ease. Be advised that most cases of gynecomastia are idiopathic, however, meaning there’s no known cause. You may not know much more after a visit like this than you did before.
So, if you’re not thinking seriously about surgery, why would you visit a board certified plastic surgeon to talk about your case? Simply put, a gynecomastia specialist will see dozens and dozens of guys with moobs each year. In our case, man boobs patients number in the hundreds annually. We probably see more patients with gynecomastia in a year than other doctors do in several years.
Take a look at the top gynecomastia surgeons page on gynecomastia.org. You’ll see that most of these professionals do 50 – 100 man boob surgeries ever year. Along with these surgeons, we have seen and heard it all. No matter what you may be wondering about—family history, possible “remedies,” even how to hide your condition—we can talk about it with authority. If you’ve decided not to have surgery, we can even discuss how to live with your moobs.
If you should hear enthusiasm for gynecomastia surgery during a consultation with a well-qualified doctor, it’s probably because we all know what a difference the procedure can make to a patient’s quality of life. But you should never feel a bit of pressure—the decision is up to you. These specialists will tell you all about the operation and what you might expect, but whether to move forward or not is completely your call.
Finally, as to whether the surgery is a big step—it is. It is an operation with inherent risks, and you will be well informed about them. You will need to set aside recovery time and budget for the procedure too.
On the other hand, if you have chosen a gynecomastia specialist to share all they know with you about moobs, you should be in excellent hands if you decide to have surgery. These doctors know what they are doing, and it’s a good bet that their patient satisfaction rates are sky high. The procedure takes place below the skin, and while we can’t call it “non-invasive,” it’s possibly less traumatic than you might think.
We would love to help you in your understanding of gynecomastia. After meeting thousands of guys with man boobs, sharing the benefit of that experience is very rewarding for us. Schedule a consultation today! We promise—no pressure!
